The famous ride is 25 minutes long.
The most common critical note on Shotover Jet is not about the ride itself — it is the length. The ride is 25 minutes on the water, one 3-star review finds that too short for the price, and another missed the chance to get photos and videos on the day. No other operator can legally offer the canyons, so there is no longer version of this ride. If time on the water is your yardstick, KJet gives you a full hour from the town pier and Thunder Jet 30 or 60 minutes on the lake and the Kawarau.

KJet is not the canyon ride — and expecting that is the classic mistake.
KJet covers the lower, braided Shotover, not the narrow canyons — the recurring disappointed review is from someone who thought they had booked the canyon run. Book KJet for what it is: the longest ride of the in-town options, across three waterways, starting in the town centre. Book Shotover Jet if the canyon walls are the point.
Two more patterns worth knowing. Skippers Canyon Jet collects glowing reviews (currently 4.9★ from 788 reviews) — but read them closely and the trip is half road trip: about 30 of its roughly 180 minutes are in the boat, and the historic Skippers Road is a narrow, unsealed cliff-side track that nervous passengers genuinely do not enjoy. Dart River reviews turn on expectations and weather: with the Queenstown option you spend more time in the shuttle than on the river, and after heavy rain the glacier-fed water runs grey rather than turquoise. On a clear day, reviewers describe the scenery as spectacular. On the Dart River jet boat and Funyak day, the critical notes come from single voices — one reviewer found the wind on the jet boat cold and the Funyak hard to steer at first, another mentions sandflies and a wait at the end of the day.
And the one thing all six rides share: the spray. Every ride puts water in your face, and between June and September that water is properly cold — layer up beyond what the sunshine suggests, and let the heated handrails (Shotover Jet and KJet run them in winter) do the rest.
So which one do you actually want?
You want Shotover Jet if this is your one Queenstown jet boat and you want the icon. The canyons are the postcard, the spins are the show, and no other boat is allowed in there. Go in knowing it is 25 minutes, skip the photo package guilt-free, and it will not disappoint.
You want KJet if time on the water and convenience beat the canyon. A full hour on the water, three waterways, departures from the Main Town Pier 365 days a year, kids from age 2, your own camera welcome — the sensible default for most first visits without a car.
You want Skippers Canyon Jet if the journey is the point. Jet boat plus gold-rush history plus a 4WD road you would not want to drive yourself — as long as exposed gravel roads excite rather than terrify you.
You want Dart River if scenery outranks adrenaline. Dart River Adventures runs the only trips here that enter a World Heritage wilderness, the Māori commentary gives the valley context, and the jet boat is the vehicle rather than the show. Plan for the half day and check the weather.
You want the Dart River jet boat and Funyak day if you would rather spend the whole day out there. The jet boat takes you upstream, you paddle an inflatable canoe back down with stops in side streams and beech forest, and lunch is a picnic by the river — 6 h 30 min in all, from age 5.
You want Thunder Jet if you want spins and spray in a short, simple format. Same waters as KJet in a shorter format, from age 2, photo stops included — the easiest yes in the line-up.
